Date: Effective from 1st August 2025

šŸ“„ Content:

1. Members of the Association may, if they meet the conditions set out in this Bye Law, be accredited by the Association as Supervisors.
2. All applications are determined by the Supervision Committee (hereafter referred to as ā€˜the Committee’) in accordance with the procedures set out in Bye Law 4.
3.1 A member making an application for accreditation as an IAHIP supervisor must complete the appropriate application form and fulfil each of the following criteria:
(a) be an accredited member of IAHIP;
(b) have five years of experience of supervised practice as a psychotherapist post initial accreditation by IAHIP or by an equivalent accrediting organisation acceptable to IAHIP;
(c) maintain a psychotherapy practice which they pursue from a humanistic and integrative perspective;
(d) have delivered a minimum of 1200 hours of post accreditation psychotherapy work;
(e) have successfully completed a Professional Supervision Training Course in accordance with the standards laid down inĀ Bye Law 5B and provided evidence of such completion;
(f) have at least one year’s experience of providing supervision to a minimum of 50 hours, including at least 10 hours one-to-one supervision with the same supervisee (during or post training);
(g) be currently supervising no fewer than 2 supervisees;
(h) be under the supervision of an appropriately accredited supervisor who, if not an IAHIP accredited supervisor, must be a supervisor accredited as such by another equivalent organisation acceptable to IAHIP*, and who agrees to work in a way that is congruent with the supervisee’s orientation as a humanistic and integrative supervisor. (*Check the IAHIP website for the current list.);
(i) provide a comprehensive Supervisor’s Report attesting:
a) to the quality and quantity of the applicant’s supervisory work with reference to the functions of supervision,Ā and
b) that the applicant maintains a psychotherapy practice from a Humanistic and Integrative perspective; and
(j) provide evidence that they currently have appropriate professional indemnity insurance cover for both the psychotherapy and supervision work they are doing.
3.2 Applications from mature supervisors of long-term supervision practice, including members who have been accredited through Bye Law 2D, may achieve equivalence to current required standards through demonstrating a combination of initial core training(s) and supervision-specific continuous professional development (CPD).
Such supervisors must specify that they wish their application to be considered with reference to this clause. Such applicants are required to upload with their application a professional statement to the satisfaction of IAHIP that, between their initial supervision training(s) and supervision-specific CPD, they meet or exceed all requirements expected of any first-time applicant, as well as some requirements relevant to more long-time supervisors.
These include:
a) Initial training(s) and supervision-specific CPD hours amounting to at least 100 hours, outlining how they correspond to the criteria within Bye Law 5B. It is not enough to state that your learning corresponds to these criteria; please be explicit in suggesting how they correspond.
b) A minimum of 50 hours supervision practice in total with at least 25 of these to have taken place over the 12 months preceding application and with at least 10 of these hours with the same supervisee.
c) Evidence of having maintained a supervision practice over the full 5 years preceding application.
d) Evidence of having been in supervision of that supervision over the full preceding 5 years.
Please note, requirements b-d above need an accompanying letter of support from your supervisor(s) from the full 5 years preceding application attesting to these requirements. Where it is not possible to acquire such letters, any alternative sources of support for your attendance at supervision will be considered (i.e., receipts, letters written for other purposes, etc).
4. Once an applicant has been informed that they are an accredited supervisor as per the procedure outlined in Bye Law 4, they may use the initials SIAHIP after their name to indicate that they are accredited as a Supervisor of IAHIP.
5. Accreditation as an IAHIP supervisor is valid for a period of five years, subject to the supervisor continuing as an accredited member of IAHIP and payment of all such annual fees as may be determined by the Association from time to time.
Those wishing to apply for re-accreditation as an IAHIP supervisor after that period, must do so in accordance with Bye Law 4B.
6. Accreditation as an IAHIP supervisor is linked to accreditation as a psychotherapist, accordingly, such accreditation shall become invalid automatically if an accredited supervisor ceases to be an accredited member of the Association.
7. Accreditation as a psychotherapist and accreditation as an IAHIP supervisor involves two distinct application processes, and separate fees, as laid down from time to time, are payable.
8. Those whose applications have not been accepted for accreditation as a supervisor must be informed in writing by the Committee Secretary and a report stating the grounds for the decision must be provided to the applicant. Applicants may reapply once the deficits detailed in this report have been rectified.
9. Undertakings
All applicants for accreditation as supervisors of IAHIP must give the following undertakings in the event that their application is successful:
a. to abide by the IAHIP Code of Ethics and Practice for Supervisors;
b. to present themselves for re-accreditation as an IAHIP Supervisor as IAHIP requires;
c. to show commitment to their ongoing professional development as a supervisor;
d. to be committed to maintaining appropriate ongoing supervision and support for their work as an IAHIP Supervisor in accordance with IAHIP requirements;
e. to contract with their supervisor to ensure that supervision of their supervision practice is proportionate to the composition and complexity of their caseload; and
f. to ensure they maintain adequate and up-to-date professional indemnity insurance for their practice as supervisors.
10. Implementation
10.1 The Supervision Committee is the competent body to implement this Bye Law in accordance with the provisions of Bye Law 4, and the decisions of the Committee as to whether an applicant for accreditation as a supervisor fulfils the conditions shall, subject to the right of appeal below, be final.
10.2 Applicants for accreditation, whose applications are refused by the Committee, may appeal this decision if the Committee did not properly follow its own procedures. The appeal must be made in accordance with the procedure for Appeals set out in Bye Law 10A and must be made within 20 working days of receipt of the decision being appealed.
