1. Members
1.1 Article 3 of the Company’s Articles of Association states that
“The subscribers to the Memorandum of Association and such other persons as the Governing Body shall admit to membership, shall be members of the Company.”
The Governing Body has admitted fully accredited members as members of the Company.
1.2 The rights of all fully accredited members are set out in this Bye Law.
2. Affiliates and Associate Members
2.1 Pursuant to Article 8 of the Company’s Articles of Association, which states:
"The Governing Body may by Bye Laws determine the rights and responsibilities of persons who are not full members of the company, but who may wish to affiliate or associate with the company”.
The Governing Body has established a number of categories of association or affiliation with the Company.
2.2 The categories and the rights and obligations applicable to each category of persons who are not full members of the company are also set out in this Bye Law.
2.3 The categories shall be known as:
a) Certified Associate Members
b) Pre-Accredited Associate Members
c) Student Associate Members
d) Non-Practising Members
e) Retired Members
f) Honorary Members
g) Friends
h) Affiliate Organisations
3. Fully Accredited Members
3.1 Fully Accredited Members are those who have been approved by the Accreditation or Re-accreditation Committee as satisfying the requirements for accreditation as humanistic and integrative psychotherapists and re-accreditation as set out in other relevant Bye Laws.
3.2 Fully Accredited Members shall have the following rights:
• to represent themselves as fully accredited members of the Association.
For advertising purposes, the following may be used:
Joe Bloggs – Accredited Member of IAHIP
Joe Bloggs MIAHIP
Where an Accredited Member is also an IAHIP Accredited Supervisor, they may include this title and/or use SIAHIP alongside or instead of MIAHIP.
• to have a Membership number
• to attend and vote at AGMs and EGMs
• to be eligible to serve on the Governing Body and Committees
• to be on a selected mailing list
• to receive the Inside Out Journal
• to receive IAHIP newsletters and bulletins
• to be notified of selected events, seminars, workshops, etc. being organised by IAHIP, to receive a discount on fees for attendance at such events, and to receive a certificate of attendance
• to register with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP), subject to ICP’s own regulations.
4. Certified Associate Members
4.1 Application for acceptance as a Certified Associate Member is open to those who provide evidence to the Association that they
(i) have, normally within the previous five years, graduated from a psychotherapy training course which has been formally recognised by the Association in accordance with Bye Law 5A;
(ii) have the intention of becoming an accredited member of the Association in accordance with Bye Law 2A, 2C or 2E;
(iii) are practising as a humanistic and integrative psychotherapist under regular supervision and are covered by a policy of insurance for professional indemnity;
(iv) consent to be governed by the IAHIP Codes of Ethics and Practice and to be subject to the Complaints Policy and Procedures;
(v) provide a recommendation from their current supervisor.
4.2 Acceptance of a person as a Certified Associate Member shall not be construed in any way as pre-empting the eventual decision of the Association regarding their suitability for accreditation.
4.3 If the Certified Associate Member does not apply for accreditation within five years of completing their training, their Certified Associate Member status will lapse.
4.4 Certified Associate Members shall be awarded an IAHIP Letter of Confirmation of Professional Training in Humanistic & Integrative Psychotherapy and shall have the following rights:
• to represent themselves as Certified Associate Members of the Association.
For advertising purposes, the following statements only can be used:
Jo Bloggs – Certified Associate Member of IAHIPÂ
and / or
Jo Bloggs – Certified Associate Member of IAHIP who has completed an IAHIP Recognised Psychotherapy Training Course and is currently working towards full accreditation with IAHIP.
(Any wilful or persistent breach of this provision shall provide grounds for withdrawal of Certified Associate Member status and for refusal of accreditation and membership of the Association if and when a Certified Associate Member applies for accreditation.)
• to attend AGMs and EGMs (without voting rights)
• to be on a selected mailing list
• to receive the Inside Out Journal
• to receive IAHIP newsletters and bulletins
• to be notified of selected events, seminars, workshops, etc. being organised by IAHIP
• to receive a discount on fees for attendance at such events.
• to receive a certificate of attendance at such events.
5. Pre-Accredited Associate Members
5.1 Application for acceptance as a Pre-accredited Associate Member is open to those who:
(i) have graduated, normally within the previous five years, from a psychotherapy training course which meets all the requirements of Phase 1 of psychotherapy training specified by Bye Law 2C or 2E as necessary for eventual accreditation and membership of the Association;
(ii) have the intention of becoming an accredited member of IAHIP and of meeting the requirements set out in Bye Law 2C or 2E for those completing the post-course practicum period (Phase 2);
• are practising as a humanistic and integrative psychotherapist under regular supervision and are covered by a policy of insurance for professional indemnity;
(iv) consent to be governed by the IAHIP Codes of Ethics and Practice and to be subject to the IAHIP Complaints Policy and Procedures.
(v) provide a recommendation from their current supervisor.
5.2 Acceptance of a person as a Pre-accredited Associate Member shall not be construed in any way as pre-empting the eventual decision of the Association regarding their suitability for accreditation.
5.3 If the Pre-accredited Associate Member does not apply for accreditation within five years of their completion of their training, Pre-Accredited Associate Member status will lapse.
5.4 Pre-accredited Associate Members shall have the following rights:
• to attend AGMs and EGMs (without voting rights)
• to be on a selected mailing list
• to receive the Inside Out Journal
• to receive IAHIP newsletters and bulletins
• to be notified of selected events, seminars, workshops, etc. being organised by IAHIP
• to receive a discount on fees for attendance at such events.
• to receive a certificate of attendance at such events.
5.5 Pre-accredited Associate Members may NOT represent themselves as accredited members of the Association. For advertising purposes, the following statements only can be used:
Joe Bloggs – Pre-accredited Associate Member of IAHIP
and / or
Joe Bloggs – Pre-accredited Associate Member of IAHIP who is currently working towards full accreditation with IAHIP.
(Any wilful or persistent breach of this provision shall provide grounds for withdrawal of Pre-accredited Associate Member status and for refusal of accreditation and membership of the Association if and when a Pre-accredited Associate Member applies for accreditation.)
6. Student Associate Members
6.1 Application for the category of Student Associate Member is open to students/trainees who
(i) are pursuing a training course in psychotherapy that meets all the requirements of Phase 1 of psychotherapy training specified by Bye Law 2A, 2C or 2E, with a view to applying for accreditation and full membership of IAHIP in due course. [Psychotherapy training courses which are Recognised by IAHIP have been verified as meeting Phase 1 course requirements. IAHIP has no formal relationship with any other courses and will not comment on whether they meet the training criteria required prior to an applicant submitting an application for accreditation]
(ii) supply a letter of confirmation of student/trainee status from their training programme
(iii) agree to conduct their clinical practice as a trainee psychotherapist in accordance with the IAHIP Code of Ethics and Practice for Psychotherapists. (NB, as the Association bears no responsibility for both the clinical practice of psychotherapy trainees and the supervision thereof, nothing shall oblige the Association to respond to or deal with any complaint made against a Student Associate Member).
6.2 Acceptance of a person as a Student Associate Member shall not be construed in any way as pre-empting the eventual decision of the Association regarding their suitability for accreditation. Student Associate Members may NOT represent themselves as accredited members of the Association.
6.3 Student Associate Member status shall cease when the student is no longer, for whatever reason, pursuing a training course in psychotherapy such as described in clause 6.1(i) above.
6.4 Student Associate Members shall have the following rights:
• to attend AGMs and EGMs (without voting rights)
• to be on a selected mailing list
• to receive the Inside Out Journal
• to receive IAHIP newsletters and bulletins
• to be notified of selected events, seminars, workshops, etc. being organised by IAHIP
• to receive a discount on fees for attendance at such events.
• to receive a certificate of attendance at such events.
• to place with IAHIP one classified advertisement free of charge related to a research project they may be engaged in as part of their psychotherapy training, subject to such conditions as may be set down by the Governing Body and subject also to agreeing to list IAHIP in the acknowledgements on completion of such projects and to supply IAHIP with an abstract of the completed project. Without any obligation to do so, IAHIP may be willing to publish submitted abstracts at any stage.
As a special privilege for Student Associate Members of IAHIP Recognised Courses, for advertising purposes, such persons may use the following statements only:
Jo Bloggs – Student Associate Member of IAHIP

and / orÂ
Â
Jo Bloggs – Student Associate Member of IAHIP who is currently in training on an IAHIP Recognised Course.
(Any wilful or persistent breach of this provision shall provide grounds for withdrawal of Student Associate Member status and for refusal of membership of the Association if and when that person applies for accreditation.)
7. Non-Practising Members
Accredited and fully paid-up members of the Association who wish for any reason (such as taking a sabbatical, family reasons, career change, illness, travel, study) wish to suspend their practice of psychotherapy for one year or more, may become Non-Practising Members.
7.1 Members who wish to take parental leave from their practice for less than a year, because of pregnancy or the birth or adoption of a baby or for other reasons relating to their children, do not have to become Non-Practising Members.
7.2 Members may become Non-Practising Members, and continue in that status, by notifying the Membership Secretary of their decision, and by paying the special Non-Practising Member annual subscription, which will be determined by the Governing Body of the Association from time to time.
7.3 Members who signify their intention to become Non-Practising Members remain as full members until the end of the year for which they have already paid their subscription, and their Non-Practising Member status begins at the beginning of the following calendar year.
7.4 Non-Practising Members may return to full membership provided they meet the criteria and conditions laid down by the Association. These criteria and conditions will be determined from time to time by the Governing Body. They may differ for those who have already been re-accredited at least once, and those who have not yet reached that point. They may also differ depending on the length of time for which the person involved was a Non-Practising Member.
7.5 Non-Practising Members may not, as long as they hold that status, continue to represent themselves as practising Members of IAHIP. Non-Practising Members may use the designation MIAHIP (Non-Practising).
7.6 Non-Practising Members shall not, as long as they hold that status, be eligible to register with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy.
7.7 Non-Practising Members shall not be covered by the IAHIP complaints policy and procedures for the time in which they hold that status. They shall, however, continue be bound by the IAHIP complaints policy and procedures in relation to any complaint that pertains to the time they were full members of the Association.
7.8 As well as having the right to return to full membership, Non-Practising Members shall have the following additional rights:
• to attend AGMs and EGMs (without voting rights)
• to be on the mailing list
• to receive the INSIDE OUT journal
• to receive IAHIP newsletters and bulletins
8. Retired Members
This category is open to members who no longer work in the field of psychotherapy and as a consequence do not meet the criteria for re-accreditation as full members but wish to stay involved with the Association.
8.1 Retired Members have the following rights
• to attend AGMs and EGMs (without voting rights)
• to receive the Inside Out Journal
• to be on the IAHIP email list to receive information on upcoming events, etc.
• to discounts on certain events
• to be eligible to serve on Committees other than the Governing Body
• to attend regional events, conferences, etc.
8.2 Retired Members may use the designation MIAHIP (Retired).
9. Honorary Members
Honorary Membership may be awarded by the Governing Body to long-serving members of the Association who have retired with no intention to practice again and who are judged by the Governing Body to have contributed significantly to the well-being and development of the Association by their service to formal or informal committees or working-groups of the Association.
9.1 Since the Governing Body at any given time may not know the earlier contribution of a member of the Association, any fully accredited member may write to the Governing Body nominating a member they believe should be awarded the status of Honorary Member, citing the reasons why it is believed the award is merited.
9.2 Honorary Members will not be required to pay annual membership fees to the Association, nor will they need to seek re-accreditation.
9.3 Honorary Members shall have the following rights:
• to retain their Membership number
• to attend and vote at AGMs and EGMs
• to be eligible to serve on Committees other than the Governing Body
• to be on a selected mailing list
• to receive the Inside Out Journal
• to receive IAHIP newsletters and bulletins
• to be notified of selected events, seminars, workshops, etc. being organised by IAHIP
• to receive a discount on fees for attendance at such events, and to receive a certificate of attendance
9.4 Honorary Members may use the designation MIAHIP (Honorary)
10. Friends
10.1 Application for the category Friend is intended for those individuals who are interested in the field of psychotherapy and who are working in a related field, or for practising psychotherapists who are members of another association. They must be recommended for this category by a fully accredited member of IAHIP.
10.2 Acceptance of a person as a Friend shall not be construed in any way as pre-empting any eventual decision of the Association regarding their suitability for accreditation.
10.3 Friends shall have the following rights:
• They will be on a selected mailing list.
• They will receive the Inside Out Journal.
• They will receive IAHIP Newsletters and bulletins
• They will be notified of selected events, seminars, workshops, etc. being organised by IAHIP.
Friends may NOT represent themselves as Members of IAHIP nor use the letters IAHIP as part of their advertising material or stationery. Any wilful or persistent breach of this provision shall provide grounds for withdrawal of Friend status and for refusal of membership of the Association if and when that person applies for accreditation.
11. Affiliate Organisations
11.1 Application for the category of Affiliate Organisation is open to appropriate associations, agencies, training organisations, psychotherapy centres and professional bodies in related fields, both statutory and voluntary. Such organisations are required to endorse the aspirations contained within the Codes of Ethics and Practice of IAHIP.
11.2 Individual members and employees of an Affiliate Organisation may NOT represent themselves as Members of IAHIP nor use the letters IAHIP as part of their advertising material or stationery.
11.3 Affiliate Organisations shall have the following rights:
• One representative of an Affiliate Organisation may attend AGMs without voting rights.
• To be on a selected mailing list.
• To receive the Inside Out Journal.
• To receive IAHIP Newsletters and bulletins.
• To be notified of selected events, seminars, workshops, etc. being organised by IAHIP.
12. Fees
Fees for all categories shall be fixed from time to time by IAHIP and shall be payable on 1st January each year.  An up to date schedule of fees shall be available each year in the members area of the IAHIP website. Failure to make payment in full of all relevant fees when due will result in cancellation of that individual’s membership, association or other status as outlined in this Bye Law.
